A stunning photographic history of Manchester
The Francis Frith Collection.
The fastest growing town in England, was how Manchester was described 250 years ago.
There seemed to be a determination in the minds of the burghers and leading citizens to make something of this place, to push forward this small town in north west England and stamp its name not just on the rest of the country but on the world.
They succeeded and in the years that followed Manchester became the place where the first canal system was started, passenger railways were born and plans for a great ship canal were hatched.
In more recent times it was the birthplace of the modern computer.
